Tensions Rise in Congress Over Bullfighting Ban Initiative

The initiative to ban bullfighting in Mexico City faces uncertainty as the deadline approaches. Various political groups clash over the direction of this controversial issue, with ecological organizations rallying for action.

Tensions Rise in Congress Over Bullfighting Ban Initiative

Tensions are rising in Mexico City due to the lack of clarity regarding the prohibition of bullfighting and animal shows. The deadline for Congress to address the citizen initiative aimed at ending these practices expires next Tuesday; however, no decision is expected to be made by then.

Bullfighting has created division within the ruling party and among the different congressional factions. In this context, the ecologist coordinator, Jesús Sesma, called for increased pressure on Congress to put an end to the delaying tactics surrounding the issue. In this regard, the Green Party presented a new proposal to prohibit bullfighting, seeking to maintain pressure on Morena.

"It is still absurd that these shows take place at the expense of non-human animals. It is inconsistent for lawmakers who self-identify as animal rights advocates to hesitate to make a firm decision on this matter," Sesma stated.

The situation is complicated by the intervention of the Superior Court of the capital, which ordered the Legislative Power to refrain from debating the request to prohibit bullfighting. In light of this interference, Sesma called on environmental organizations to demonstrate in front of Congress next Tuesday to demand that the initiative be addressed.

In this context, the pressure between the Green Party, which advocates for a total ban, and Morena, which has not achieved consensus on the matter, increases. The lack of clarity in the 4T regarding this issue has generated tensions and criticisms, especially due to the ambiguous stance of some members of the ruling alliance.

It is essential that a clear and firm position is defined regarding bullfighting and animal shows in Mexico City, and that the voice of the citizens seeking to end these practices is heard.
